PERSONHOOD IS a new and rapidly growing movement within the Pro-Life Community that seeks to establish a legal definition of a person that includes unborn children, thus making killing an unborn child a crime punishable under existing murder laws.
November 1, 2015 will mark the 10 year anniversary of the introduction of the first ever Personhood Amendment in U.S. History and the beginning of the Personhood Movement. Pro-Life Dave began developing state Personhood Amendments in 2004. Dave introduced the first one in Mississippi in 2005 and is considered the Founding Father of the Personhood Movement for his pioneering research and work. In light of the upcoming anniversary Dave wishes to share these brief perspectives and insights to the Pro-Life Community in the United States.
The first 10 years has been mostly an educational learning curve for Pro-Lifers.
- First, to understand that Personhood had always been the main and original Pro-Life strategy to end abortion; introduced back in the 1970s (Roe was in 1973).
- Second, that the Personhood strategy developed in the 1970s was singularly designed to be implemented at both the FEDERAL (congressional) and STATE levels.
- Third, that National and State Pro-Life leaders failure ever introduce a state Personhood Amendment is directly tied to the Pro-Life Movement failure to end legalized abortion.
PERSONHOOD HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE KEY
– see www.ProLifeDave.com for the multimedia presentation:
“Roe v. Wade – In Their Own Words”
Hear for yourself the Supreme Court Justices and the attorneys expose the heart of the issue: Personhood – and admit this is the key to legally protecting the life of unborn children in the courts.
PERSONOOD, A 1970s STRATEGY
Pro-Life leaders in the 1970s and 1980s were dogmatic about Personhood at the Federal level BUT FAILED to ever introduce Personhood at the state level. It wasn’t until over 30 years later in 2005 that Pro-Life Dave introduced the first state Personhood Amendment in U.S. History.
Pro-Life Dave: “This shows complete failure of Pro-Life leadership to not even follow through on their own original strategy introduced back in the 1970s, to introduce state Personhood Amendments. Imagine if Personhood had been established 30 years ago and overturned Roe, how many babies could have been saved!”
PERSONHOOD – THE FIRST 10 YEARS
Sadly, for the first 10 years we have had to re-educate the Pro-Life Movement on Personhood AND have also had to fight the original proponents of Personhood. In the 1990s thru today, Pro-Life leaders on the national and state level who are considered the ‘old timers’ like Americans United for Life (AUL) and National Right to Life (NRLC) have turned their backs on Personhood when Personhood was their original main strategy.
STATE PERSONHOOD IS STILL YOUNG
It’s been 10 years but the concept of Personhood is strongly re-awakening within the Pro-Life Community again as the central and key strategy to end legalized abortion. With the mass influx of new believers, there has been much enthusiasm, activity, and advances – but there still remains a significant immaturity within Personhood leadership. Let us hope that recent failures in implementing Personhood at the state level will not discourage Pro-Lifers but challenge them to step up, to question, to strengthen, and to improve the quality of our leaders and efforts.
A HOUSE STILL DIVIDED and CONFUSED
Yes, we need unity, but not in failed strategies or leadership but in new leadership who will keep their focus on Personhood, the KEY to Ending Abortion. A house divided cannot stand. Over 40 years and hundreds of millions of dollars later, the Pro-Life Movement leadership has still not ended abortion. This, in and of itself, should provoke all Pro-Lifers to re-examine our leaders and direction.
THE CHALLENGE FOR ALL PRO-LIFERS
We must return to the original Pro-Life strategy of Personhood. We must also learn to be ‘dogmatic’ in support of Personhood by making every effort to win and build support for it. That Personhood is the Original Pro-Life Strategy and to detract or focus on anything else is counter-productive.
If you wish to mark the November 1, 2015 anniversary in your area, we encourage you to do so at noon at your church, city hall, or county courthouse. If you are in the Mississippi area here are the details: The first Personhood Amendment in U.S. History was filed on November 1, 2005 around noon time at the Secretary of State’s Office in Jackson, Mississippi, located across from the State Capitol.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIRST PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT
The first Personhood Amendment, called the Ultimate Human Life Amendment, was originally scheduled to be introduced at the end of August 2005. Biloxi, Mississippi, home to Pro-Life Dave, took a direct hit by Hurricane Katrina on August 29th forever intertwining in the history of Hurricane Katrina and the first Personhood Amendment. Pro-Dave’s Office at the Gulf Coast American Family Association was destroyed including the public Conservative Christian Library housed there. Pro-Life Dave lived two blocks off the beach, lived through Katrina, and had to delay the amendment’s introduction for two months because of working in the recovery efforts.
